Open access options
BMJ Group provides a number of options for you to make your research open access.
Publish in The BMJ
Our flagship journal The BMJ was an early pioneer of open access, publishing all research on an open access basis for over 20 years. Non-research articles may also be published open access depending on funder mandates. For more information, visit The BMJ’s open access page.
Publish in one of our fully open access journals
BMJ Group publishes a number of fully open access titles from the broad-scope BMJ Open, our first fully open access journal, to a portfolio of specialty journals, spanning across different subject areas including global health, ophthalmology, respiratory research and many more. Browse our list of fully open access journals.
Publish in one of our hybrid journals:
- Using our gold open access option – our gold open access option is available for most of our subscription journals. This option enables authors to publish their article open access for an Article Processing Charge (APC). Authors will be asked whether they wish to take up the option on acceptance of their article. Browse our list of hybrid journals.
- Self-archive in a repository (using the Green open access route) – this refers to articles being made open access outside of a hybrid or subscription journal. In this compliance route, authors deposit a version of their article (the ‘Author Accepted Manuscript’ or AAM) to an open access article repository. These are usually institutional repositories, subject repositories or PubMed Central. Learn more about our Green open access policy.
