Fees and waivers

Publish in one of our specialty journals

We publish over 70 medical and allied health journals. You can publish in one of our fully open access titles or you can choose an open access option in our other journals (‘hybrid’ journals). To find out more about the associated Article Processing Charge (APC) please visit the website of the journal to which you wish to submit. A full list of our journals is available here – look out for the open access icon for our fully open access titles .

Publish in BMJ Open

BMJ Open is our broad scope open access journal, which publishes medical research from all disciplines and therapeutic areas. The Article Processing Charge is £1350 (exclusive of VAT for UK and EU authors).

Publish in The BMJ

The BMJ is our flagship journal, committed to keeping research articles open access. To support this, authors are asked to pay an Article Processing Charge of £3000 (exclusive of VAT for UK and EU authors) on acceptance of their research paper. For more information, visit The BMJ‘s open access page.

Help paying with APCs

Journals where open access is optional (‘hybrid’ journals) do not offer waivers or discounts.

A number of institutions have joined BMJ’s Open Access Programme, which can cover the whole cost of Open Access publishing for authors at participating institutions or may allow authors to receive a discounted APC. Check here to find out if your institution will cover your APC.

We appreciate that some authors do not have access to funds to cover APCs and we may accept part payment where limited funds are available.

We grant APC waivers under very limited circumstances. Request for waivers or discounts should be made during submission. Requests for waivers or ad hoc discounts made while an article is being peer reviewed or after it has been accepted will not be granted. Each request is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Requests for waivers/discounts are assessed by BMJ staff and not by journal editors. Please do not contact editors regarding waivers or discounts as they will not be able to assist. A decision by BMJ staff to grant a waiver or discount will not influence any editorial decision and should not be considered an indication that your article will be accepted.

If an article reports funding from a funder with an open access mandate or policy that covers paying APCs, BMJ expects that the APC will be paid.

Requests for waivers and discounts will be considered using the following criteria:

  • articles written by authors based solely in our List One are eligible for a full APC waiver
  • articles written by authors based in our List Two are eligible for a 50% discount.

These lists are based on the HINARI Core Offer Groups A and B, and the World Bank Country and Lending Groups, downloaded in July 2019. They will be updated annually.

Requests for waivers should be made using the following form.

Other discounts

In addition to the above, we offer other discounts on APCs.

In recognition of reviewers’ support for our journals, any reviewer that returns a full review on time can receive a 25% discount on the Article Processing Charge for a paper for which they are the corresponding author, if submitted within 12 months of completing the review to the same journal they reviewed for. Please note that this does not apply to journals with a hybrid open access option.

Many of our open access journals also offer discounts to members of affiliated societies. Please check the website for the journal you are submitting to for more information. These discounts will be journal-specific (e.g. RCPCH members receive a 25% discount when publishing in BMJ Paediatrics Open; this discount cannot be applied to any of our other journals).

Refund policy

We do not offer refunds of APCs once articles have been published.
